About Revision Breast Implant Surgery

Revision breast implant surgery is a group of potential procedures designed to correct or improve the result of a previous breast augmentation. This can involve changing the size of implants (increase or decrease), changing the implant shape, correcting implant-related complications, or adjusting the appearance of the breasts to better meet patient expectations.

The Procedure

Revision implant surgery can be considered in those patients suffering from conditions such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, implant malposition or those dissatisfied with their current size and/or shape. This surgery can use existing scars where possible but occasionally if more involved reshaping is necessary then new incisions and resulting scars may be indicated and necessary to achieve the best possible aesthetic results.

Existing implants can be removed or replaced with more modern, safer implants with the latest advanced implant technology and internal adjustments made to accommodate these if required.

Results can be long lasting and most patients can return to work and light activities after a couple of weeks.

Your Journey

What can I expect, pre treatment?

A key aspect of preparing for a breast procedure is that Your surgeon understands your desires and expectations. At your initial consultation, your consultant will explain the procedure in great detail, discuss size and your expectations and what he/she can achieve for you, ensuring you have realistic expectations of the results.

Aside from the important discussion regarding breast shape and size, Your surgeon will want to evaluate your current physical health and health history, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Because this is an elective procedure, you and Your surgeon will naturally carefully discuss the benefits and risks involved, as is the case with any surgical procedure.

What can I expect, during treatment?

During the augmentation procedure, your consultant will make an incision and create a pocket for the breast implant, either partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the glands (subglandular). The most appropriate incision for you will have been discussed at your initial consultation with your consultant and Registered General Nurse.

River Medical is unique and different to other providers in that we use what is known as a “sizer” during your procedure which means you will get the perfect implant fit for your body type.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, takes between one and two hours and is carried out as a day case procedure.

What can I expect, post treatment?

You will need someone to take you home when you are discharged by the Surgeon as you will not be able to drive. You will have some dressings around your breasts and a surgical bra. Initially, your breasts will feel firm and may be swollen and will be sitting high on your chest. As the swelling goes down, they will drop into a more natural position and shape. Your surgeon can tell you more about the typical recovery process and may make recommendations based on your individual case but by and large expect to take 2 weeks off work. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently and the River Medical team/we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery. You can rest assured that Your surgeon and nursing staff will be on hand 24/7 to answer even the most minor or personal of questions you may have.

This is an extremely common question and you can rest assured that the answer is yes, the ability to breast feed should not be affected after your procedure. The breast tissue and the duct connections to the nipples are not affected or touched during the implant procedure.

Before and after pictures on websites can be misleading as they may not be patients of the surgeon who will be carrying out your surgery. As every person has completely different expectations and different treatment requirements, it is a much more valuable tool for your consultant to show pictures of not only surgeries that he/she has carried out but also show you results you will be likely to achieve.
