A facelift is sometimes performed in conjunction with other facial aesthetic procedures, such as a brow lift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery.
A face and / or neck lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the deeper tissues of the face and neck back to a more youthful and proportionate position – helping a patient ‘turn back the clock’ looking like a fresher version of his or herself. A composite deep plane face and neck lift facilitates release of the deep facial and neck retaining anchor points / ligaments – allowing the surgeon to access the central aged portion of the face and neck. The face and neck are then free to be lifted to a proportionate contoured position, unhindered by tension and in a natural vector. This can be combined when suitably indicted with deep central neck reduction and / or facial volume augmentation (facial fat reduction and / or fat transfer).
A key aspect of preparing for any surgery is that Your surgeon understands your desires and expectations. At your initial consultation, your consultant will explain the procedure in great detail, discuss your expectations and what he/she can achieve for you, ensuring you have realistic expectations of the results.
Your surgeon will also want to evaluate your current physical health and health history, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Because this is an elective procedure, you and Your surgeon will naturally carefully discuss the benefits and risks involved, as is the case with any surgical procedure.
There are many approaches to facelift surgery and the best approach for you will be discussed in full with Your surgeon. There is usually an incision made just in front of the ear in the natural fold. The Surgeon then expertly lifts muscle and fat structures and re-drapes skin over these structures to reveal a tighter, more youthful, more refined look. Occasionally, a small incision beneath the chin permits the removal of fatty tissue in that area and smoothing of the cord-like structures of the underlying muscle in the neck. Once excess fat is removed, underlying muscles are tightened and the skin is pulled up into its new position.
The facelift procedure is usually performed under sedation or general anaesthetic, takes between three and four hours, and is carried out as a day case procedure.
You will need someone to take you home when you are discharged by the Surgeon as you will not be able to drive. You may have bruising and swelling around the area. Your surgeon will tell you more about the typical recovery process and may make recommendations based on your individual case but by and large expect to take 2 weeks off work. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently but you can rest assured that we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery.

You will have an element of discomfort after your surgery which typically lasts one to ten days but this will be managed with the support of your consultant plastic surgeon and River Medical registered general nurse. Generally you can return to all normal activities within 6 weeks. We encourage patients to get back to their normal life as soon as it feels comfortable for them. Your consultant will assess your suitability and will recommend the best treatment for you at your initial consultation. He/she will also show your pictures of similar patients so that you can be confident about your expected results.
