Breast Augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure at River Medical. World wide it has been estimated that between 5 – 10 million women have opted for breast implants to increase the size and improve the overall shape and look of their breasts. Our team of Resident Consultant Plastic Surgeons are amongst the most the qualified and experienced in the world so you can rest assured that you are in the safest and most trusted of hands.
An agreed-sized breast implant is inserted through a small incision made in the natural crease of the breast. At River Medical, we are different to most other providers in that our Consultants use what is known as a ‘sizer’ during your procedure which allows him/her to achieve the perfect fit implant for your body.
A key aspect of preparing for a breast enlargement procedure is that Your surgeon understands your desires and expectations. After all, size is the reason why the vast majority of women choose to undergo breast augmentation, to increase size and have their breasts more in proportion to the rest of their bodies. At your initial consultation, your consultant will explain the procedure in great detail, discuss size and your expectations and what he/she can achieve for you, ensuring you have realistic expectations of the results.
Aside from the important discussion regarding breast shape and size, Your surgeon will want to evaluate your current physical health and health history, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Because this is an elective procedure, you and Your surgeon will naturally carefully discuss the benefits and risks involved, as is the case with any surgical procedure.
During the augmentation procedure, your consultant will make an incision and create a pocket for the breast implant, either partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the glands (subglandular). The most appropriate incision for you will have been discussed at your initial consultation with your consultant and Registered General Nurse.
River Medical is unique and different to other providers in that we use what is known as a “sizer” during your procedure which means you will get the perfect implant fit for your body type.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, takes between one and two hours and is carried out as a day case procedure.
You will need someone to take you home when you are discharged by the Surgeon as you will not be able to drive. You will have dressings around your breasts and a surgical bra. Initially, your breasts will feel firm and may be swollen and will be sitting high on your chest. As the swelling goes down, they will drop into a more natural position and shape. Your surgeon can tell you more about the typical recovery process and may make recommendations based on your individual case but by and large expect to take between 7-10 days off work. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently and the River Medical team/we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery. You can rest assured that Your surgeon and nursing staff will be on hand 24/7 to answer even the most minor or personal of questions you may have.
Cost should never be a deciding factor with an elective surgery such as breast augmentation. Trust, experience, and aftercare are absolutely key, and River Medical is widely recognised as the industry leader in Ireland. We are also proud to say that we adhere to the strictest of ethical guidelines and believe that only highly trained medical staff should advise on cosmetic procedures – be it surgical or non-surgical.
You will meet with our Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Nicholas Hodgins FRCS (Plast) who will discuss everything with you including your expectations and desires, the procedure and the best type of procedure for you and your body, the results as well as any possible eventualities.

You will need to take 7 to 10 days off after your surgery. If your job is physical you may require more time. You will have an element of discomfort after your surgery which typically lasts one to ten days but this will be managed with the support of your consultant plastic surgeon and River Medical registered general nurse. Generally you can return to all normal activities within 6 weeks. We encourage patients to get back to their normal life as soon as it feels comfortable for them. We feel that this really promotes and aids a speedy and successful recovery. Everyone recovers differently but you can rest assured that we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery.
Our consultant plastic surgeons use very fine specialist stitching which minimises scarring. He/she will discuss this in great detail with you at your initial consultation. He/she will also show you actual photographs of similar incision sites that he/she has carried out on other patients. The incision is generally made under the natural crease of the breast so it won’t be visible to you at any stage.
This is an extremely common question and you can rest assured that the answer is yes, the ability to breast feed should not be affected after your procedure. The breast tissue and the duct connections to the nipples are not affected or touched during the implant procedure.
We are widely regarded as being the industry leader in cosmetic surgery. At River Medical, we never compromise on the level of care and attention we give each and every one of our patients, every time, and we are committed to you from procedure right through to your 24/7 aftercare.
Before and after pictures on websites can be misleading as they may not be patients of the surgeon who will be carrying out your surgery. As every person has completely different expectations and different treatment requirements, it is a much more valuable tool for your consultant to show pictures of not only surgeries that he/she has carried out but also show you results you will be likely to achieve.
