About Male Chest Reduction

Gynecomastia is the clinical term applied to excess development of chest tissue in men. The cause is not generally known and it can result in significant anxiety and self-consciousness. Although it’s a subject that men rarely talk about it is quite a common condition. During puberty most teenage boys will develop fatty tissue around the chest or “breast” area which for about 90% usually subsides naturally within a year or so. For the remaining 10% of men it can remain for the rest of their adult lives. The severity of the condition varies with each individual. For many men the most simple and effective way of correcting this is using liposuction which removes the pockets of fat that have developed in the chest area.

The Procedure

Male breast reduction or “gynecomastia” removes tissue and in extreme cases excess skin; and can improve the appearance of the chest in cases where diet and exercise have failed. The technique performed by your consultant plastic surgeon will depend on the degree and extent of the enlargement. Options include removal of the tissue under the breast or liposuction of the chest wall. In both instances, a small incision is made on the lower half of the nipple area (areola).

Your Journey

What can I expect, pre treatment?

A key aspect of preparing for any surgery is that Your surgeon understands your desires and expectations. At your initial consultation, your consultant will explain the procedure in great detail, discuss your expectations and what he/she can achieve for you, ensuring you have realistic expectations of the results.

Your surgeon will also want to evaluate your current physical health and health history, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Because this is an elective procedure, you and Your surgeon will naturally carefully discuss the benefits and risks involved, as is the case with any surgical procedure.

What can I expect, during treatment?

During the procedure, Your surgeon will make an incision, usually around the aereola for best results. The incision site may vary depending on your individual needs. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and takes between one and two hours.  Male chest reduction is carried out as a day case procedure.

What can I expect, post treatment?

You will need someone to take you home when you are discharged by the Surgeon as you will not be able to drive. You may have some dressings around your chest or elasticised bandage depending on your surgeon’s preference. Your surgeon can tell you more about the typical recovery process and may make recommendations based on your individual case but by and large expect to take between 1 – 2 weeks off work. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently but you can rest assured that we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery.

You can rest assured that Your surgeon and nursing staff will be on hand 24/7 to answer even the most minor or personal of questions you may have.
